Cocktail-style weddings and engagements are more popular than ever, and it is easy to see why. They are relaxed, social, and they let guests mingle instead of being locked to a seating chart. The furniture you choose does a lot of the work, and bar tables and stools are at the heart of the look. Here is how to get it right.
Why cocktail style works so well
A cocktail reception keeps people on their feet and moving between conversations. Instead of long banquet tables, you create clusters where guests can gather, rest a drink, and perch when they want to. It feels warmer and more informal than a sit-down dinner, and it usually makes better use of a smaller or outdoor space.
How much furniture do you need?
You are not seating every guest, you are creating comfortable landing spots. As a guide:
- One 1.2m bar table for every 6 to 8 guests.
- Two to three stools per table, enough for guests to perch without filling the space.
For a 60-guest engagement, that is roughly 8 to 10 bar tables with 16 to 24 stools. For a 100-guest wedding, around 13 tables with 30 or so stools. Add a few extra stools if you have older guests or a longer event.
It is also worth setting aside one or two tables near the bar and a couple by any grazing or dessert station, since those always become natural gathering points.
Styling the look
The beauty of cocktail styling is how easily it adapts to a theme:
- Timeless white: white timber high tables with white linen, candles and soft florals for a clean, elegant feel.
- Modern monochrome: pair the white tables with black metal bar stools for a sharp, contemporary look that photographs beautifully.
- A touch of colour: red metal stools or coloured florals add personality and tie into your palette.
